Job Description

My client, based in Riccarton Edinburgh, have over half a century’s experience in health and safety considerations and best practices to promote wellbeing at work and at home. Working in environments ranging from office spaces to industrial settings, they lead research projects to mitigate risks. As a third-party consultancy, they partner with commercial and government bodies and as such provide a gateway to a real variety of clients.  A vacancy has arisen within the Human Factors team for a Research Scientist to join the team and my client are open to applications from graduates looking for their first role in industry or more experienced Human Factors professionals looking for a step up.

The Role
The role will include both quantitative and qualitative research projects and presenting and documenting results so that they may be applied to real life settings. Your working environment will also be varied and time will be spent within the lab, at client’s sites for field work and also at home, as my client is very open to remote working a few days a week – in order to open this opportunity to a wider range of candidates. The projects you will be involved in will also offer a great deal of variety, from developing dealing with stress tool kits for the workplace, providing expert witness testimony and amending legislative policy for best practices. Recent projects have involved investigations into the increased risk of skin cancers within firefighters, the realities of radio-frequency ID chips for humans and display screen equipment assessments concerns for mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones.

The successful candidate will join a 30 strong wider research team and have the opportunity to learn from very experienced human factors colleagues. My client provides a collaborative working environment and offers funding assistance for further academic study within the field. The successful candidate will have a degree in Ergonomics/Human Factors and be passionate about the application of the discipline. Due to the consultancy environment, you will also need to have excellent communication and organisational skills and be computer literate. 

To be considered for the more senior position you will need to be a Registered Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors and have gained industry experience within a consultancy or end client. Research experience within musculoskeletal disorders is also highly advantageous, in addition to the above.
