Job Description

James Hume is recruiting for a Deputy Head of Engineering and Facilities to join a ground breaking new manufacturing centre for this innovative and growing biotech based in Stevenage.  This new multi occupancy facility opened at the end of last year to great success as it is now operating at full capacity and has already received funding to expand further by doubling in size.  They need a Deputy Head of Engineering and Facilities to provide strategic support, work with collaborators and take operational management of the day to day mechanical, electrical engineering and facilities activities of the site.

The Company
The company’s headquarters are in Central London and spread over 3 sites including Stevenage and now have over 170 employees focused on Cell & Gene Therapy technologies.  The company was set up by the government with the purpose to support the development of this sector by providing the scientific, technical, clinical, and commercial support to academia and industry to bring these life changing therapies to the market.  This has been very successful so far with plans to continue to have an impact on the sector and lead the way.  An example of this is the new Stevenage site that has been designed for the manufacture of these therapies in state of the art purpose built facilities.  It comprises of Grade A / B clean rooms, QC laboratories, warehousing, dispatch, along with segregated client production and business offices covering 7,200 m2.

The Role
The purpose of the Deputy Head of Engineering and Facilities is an operational role managing the day to day mechanical, electrical, & facilities management at the site.  This is a key role to work closely with the Head of Engineering and Facilities Management to join the growing team and take control of the day to day operations.  As well as contribute to strategy going forward, growing with the role as the facility expands and develops itself.

The purpose of this role is to ensure that the availability and reliability of building utilities, services, and manufacturing equipment for the operational meet collaborator requirements.  Which means you will often be dealing with collaborators either face to face or phone, email etc.  As this is a relatively new facility you will have influence on the development of the framework for compliance, GEP, quality and right first-time culture.  This role covers the hard and soft services of the facility which includes (waste, cleaning of controlled non-classified (CNC), Grade C and office areas, security, environmental, Health & Safety, landscaping, catering and other contracted services).

The team is small comprising of 4 members with many services outsourced for which you will be responsible for.  This is an excellent opportunity to take on a role in a new, cutting edge facility with a company who are leading the way in the development of life changing therapies.

You will need to have experience of managing the engineering and facilities within in a GMP phase III or commercial biologics, vaccine, cell and / or gene therapies manufacturing facility, ideally a multifunctional site but this is not essential.  You will need to have experience of working to GMP regulations, experience of FDA regulations is advantageous to your application.  In addition, you will need to have demonstrable understanding of Building Services, M&E systems, building fabric and BMS, EMS systems and operation.
