An urgent contract has arisen for an experienced Lab Technician, to join an innovative research laboratory in Falmer, Brighton, East Sussex. We are looking for a hard-working, reliable individual with experience in servicing a commercial or academic laboratory, including managing lab consumables and other stocks, maintaining and repairing centrifuges and balances, checking CO2 / liquid nitrogen cylinders, moving and managing samples, and assisting with deliveries. If you can start at short notice and if you live near Brighton (or have accommodation available in the Brighton area), please get in touch ASAP.
You will work for 3 months initially, with a pay rate of around £11 / hour (plus additional allowance to cover statutory NI and holiday amounts). The lab will be looking to recruit a permanent member of staff so you could potentially apply to this internally, or your contract could well be extended beyond 3 months. The permanent equivalent salary would be £21,000.
You can work either 8am – 4pm or 9am – 5pm. Parking is available outside but it is chargeable, so you might prefer to travel by public transport (the lab is only a few minutes’ walk from Falmer station).
This is a varied and busy position that supports a number of pioneering research projects. The lab has state-of-the-art autoclaves, centrifuges, liquid nitrogen and CO2 capabilities for sample storage and chemical processing. As the Lab Research Technician, you will be responsible for a number of routine and ad hoc duties including checking equipment (autoclaves, balances, centrifuges etc), washing and preparing glassware, sterilising equipment, checking stocks of consumables, placing orders for new consumables, collecting deliveries, moving samples etc. There will be some lifting required, so you need to be physically fit.
You must be a reliable, hard-working and approachable individual with some experience in a lab, whether a commercial laboratory, or a university / research / college laboratory. You must be physically fit, energetic, good-natured and willing to help with anything. A relevant qualification (e.g. NVQ, HNC, BSc) would be helpful but experience is more crucial. This contract will starts at the beginning of September, with interviews in mid-to-end August, and a prompt decision for the right candidate to start soon after the August bank holiday. Apply now!!
