Job Description

This pioneering Biotech who are pioneers in the use of synthetic biology and its application to transform the discovery, development and manufacture of biologics, cell & gene therapies are currently seeking an Associate Director / Senior Group Leader to take responsibility for the flagship area of the business.  They are currently in a phase of rapid expansion and are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Associate Director/Senior Group Leader to join the team and help facilitate the next stage of their development as a company, where they aim to be both innovative and entrepreneurial in everything they do.

You will join the Gene Editing team who use a variety of technical approaches to develop genetically engineered cell lines for a range of applications, including reagent verification, basic biology studies and complex disease modelling. In addition, the team carries out activities related to CRISPR-based screening – from bioinformatic design through to library construction and verification, and to pooled and arrayed screens.  Your role will be responsible for the research, development and operational activities in the Gene Editing division, where a large number of complex gene editing related projects require extensive operational capabilities, whilst also developing novel applications/approaches to address unmet market needs.  You will play a key role in managing the strategic direction of this area, working together with the Senior Leadership Team, it is therefore essential that you have a high-level understanding of how gene editing/CRISPR is applied to expedite the understanding of basic biology, to interrogate biological processes and to facilitate translational biology, but also have a vision to future opportunities, and a pragmatic/systematic view on how to get there.   A background in commercial science and in setting up new processes and developing market-focused technologies would be highly advantageous.

You day to day key areas of responsibility with include:
  • Management of the Gene Editing division
  • Providing an oversight to preferred technical approaches, technology development activities
  • Working with a Senior Leadership team to provide and define strategy in the subject area
  • Act as high-level subject matter expert for gene editing technologies
  • Support commercial activities by attending conferences/trade shows, as required
  • Develop and nurture a high-performing team, and provide associated training
  • Reporting on progress against agreed milestones and deliverables
  • Define the R&D road map for the Gene Editing Division
Suitable candidates will possess the following skills and experience: 
  • Ph.D., DPhil in relevant area (i.e. Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or Biochemistry), along with 5 years’ experience in an industry setting
  • Experience with intellectual property, both in expanding portfolio, but also in understanding patent landscapes and enabling FTO processes
  • Ability to interact with customers/partners/collaborators and accurately convey/communicate complex concepts and information
  • Familiarity and ideally direct experience working in a regulated industry, utilising SOPs, and templated documentation
  • Experience of setting up and implementing new technologies, approaches, automation in a commercial life-sciences environment
  • High-level understanding of gene editing technologies (especially CRISPR), and approaches for the design and analysis of gene editing strategies
  • Extensive understanding of translational biology, and industry developments related to personalised medicine and familiarity or direct experience with genetic engineering of iPSC, ESC or primary cells
  • Understanding/experience of carrying out CRISPR-based screening experiments, using KO and CRISPRi/a approaches.
