Job Description

A biotech who are pioneering the application of CRISPR led cell engineering, and combining this with automation and bioinformatics expertise to redefine what is possible for mammalian cell engineering are recruiting for a Group Leader for their Process Development & Analytics group.  This area has been earmarked for significant development over the next year beginning with recruiting for the person to lead this team forward.

 

As a company they are a specialised contract organisation who are providing platforms and solutions that accelerate the discovery, development and manufacture of cell & gene therapies.  Their technologies enable them to carry out targeted cell engineering using automation and informatic driven methods to advance the delivery of new therapeutics.  With a strong and inclusive culture that strikes the right balance between commitment to work and social activities with regular activities arranged, nights out, ad hoc awards, away days and celebrations.  Added to this their career progression is strong with regular promotions occurring throughout the company due to their training programmes, exposure gained and importantly opportunities created to move to more senior or technical roles depending on the direction you want your career to take.

 

For example they have, and continue to, develop platforms enable them to develop scalable methods for the production of viral vectors – AAV, Lentivirus and Adenovirus.  With sector leading expertise in the use and application of CRISPR such as the design and construction libraries and screening processes.  As well as high throughput automated CRISPR gene editing of mammalian cell lines for a range of applications.  They have developed a novel antibody display technology that enables them to  target challenging membranes through mammalian display, and optimised expression systems to accelerate discovery against intractable targets.  Additionally they have an automated expression platform for rapid small scale antibody production and characterisation.

 

The Group Leader will be responsible for a team of 6 scientists that is set to grow in number as well as in capability – a transition you will lead.  You be responsible for the day to day management of the team to motivate and develop them as scientists.  As the Group Leader you will be leading projects with collaborators to develop scalable methods for the manufacture of complex biopharmaceuticals.  Alongside internal R&D projects to further enhance the capabilities of the company and group.  Due to the seniority of the role you will also lead their scientific direction to adopt new technologies, develop new concepts to keep them at the cutting edge of science. 

 

As a team their focus is on the implementation and generation of upstream, downstream, and analytical technologies linked to viral vector and protein manufacture.  As a group they work closely with the Protein and Viral Vector teams using their proprietary mammalian cell lines and genetic systems.  They use a range of technologies such as AMBR15, DASGIP, Bioreactors, TFF, AKTA, qPCr etc. to develop complex processes to address unmet needs for the development of complex biopharmaceuticals.

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

 

They are preferably looking for a PhD qualified scientist with experience of process scale up and technology transfer activities in a commercial environment.  Knowledge of gene therapy vectors, in particular Lentivirus and AAV, is preferable but not essential for this role. Experience of managing a team of scientists is important aling with the ability to lead to scientific direction of teams..  Due to the use of computational methods for the design of platforms experience of automation, design of experimentation and quality by design (QBD) is highly advantageous but not essential.
