Job Description

  • QC Microbiologist
  • Worthing, West Sussex
  • Permanent position with competitive salary and benefits
  • Perfect for a Microbiology graduate with a year’s commercial placement
  • Knowledge of Micro techniques such as endotoxin, bioburden etc ESSENTIAL
  • Knowledge of GLP / GMP in a commercial lab / production environment PREFERRED
  • Unique Pharmaceutical company offering strong career progression opportunities

A brilliant opportunity for a graduate Microbiologist, with some experience in a regulated commercial environment (e.g. through a placement year), to progress your career with one of the most unique and highly respected Pharmaceutical companies in the country. If you have a good understanding of microbiological principles and wish to learn more about the important role that Microbiology plays in a sterile manufacturing environment, this will be a great way to develop your career. Candidates will also be considered if they do not have a degree but have some greater commercial experience.

The Company
A pioneering Europe-based Pharmaceutical organisation specialising in the treatment and prevention of allergies. Their unique focus is on the vaccination and prevention of conditions such as hay fever and their products are fascinating, complex and ever-changing. The company employs around 270 people in Worthing and has an excellent reputation for providing career development opportunities, challenging and engaging work and a pleasant, vibrant working environment.

The Role
This position is based around the methodical routine testing of drug ingredients and water samples, as well as aseptic environmental monitoring, particle monitoring, micro-organism identification and gowning monitoring, to support the complex production of liquid vaccines (oral and injectable), across both sterile and non-sterile GMP clean rooms. Using your background in microbiology to the full, you will join the friendly Quality Control team and analyse samples using a variety of techniques, logging all results on the in-house system and following GLP standards at all times. As a Level II Microbiologist, you will take accountability for raising non-conformances, assisting in the training of more junior scientists and checking the accuracy of paper and computer-based records, as well as performing hands-on routine testing.

You will be working with fascinating products and will learn all about unique drug development and production programmes. You will need to maintain high standards of cleanliness, maintaining lab equipment and investigating lab results that do not match with expectations. It is a positive, hard-working team and you will need to be the kind of person who excels in this type of environment.

Please note that your core hours are standard 8-4 days, but there may occasionally be the need to work earlier or later (earliest start 7am, latest finish 7pm).

  • 25 days' holiday
  • Stakeholder pension plan
  • Life insurance scheme
  • Non-contractual, discretionary annual bonus
  • Long term disability scheme
  • Private medical plan

The successful candidate will have a strong scientific background (ideally a degree in Microbiology, or similar – e.g. Biotechnology), with some experience gained in a regulated lab environment. This role would be ideal for a graduate with a year’s commercial lab placement experience, but we will also consider people with a lower qualification and more experience. You must have a knowledge of various Micro techniques (e.g. bio-burden, endotoxin and other staining / micro-organism identification and quantification techniques) and general lab skills (e.g. microscopy), together with a genuine enthusiasm for your work. You will also need to demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a collaborative team, together with the ambition to develop a career within Pharmaceutical QC.

This is a permanent role
