They oversee pre-formulation studies, develop new drug delivery systems, and guide products through scale-up and tech transfer.

Key responsibilities:

  • Designing dosage forms – Including tablets, capsules, suspensions, injectables, or inhalables tailored to the physicochemical properties of the API.

  • Conducting compatibility and stability studies – Using analytical methods like HPLC, DSC, and particle sizing to evaluate formulation performance over time.

  • Guiding scale-up and GMP manufacturing – Working with process engineers and quality teams to ensure reproducibility and regulatory readiness.

  • Leading formulation strategy – Including QbD approaches, DoE experimental planning, and documentation for regulatory submissions (e.g. IND, NDA, MA).

  • Mentoring formulation scientists – Providing scientific and strategic leadership to support R&D milestones and client projects.

This role typically requires experience with excipients, granulation, lyophilization, and other pharmaceutical manufacturing techniques, along with strong knowledge of ICH, FDA, and EMA expectations.

Lancashire

Lancashire is a county in the North West region of England.  Major towns and cities in Lancashire include Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Bury, Lancaster, Oldham, Preston, Rochdale and Wigan.   During the Industrial Revolution Lancashire became a major industrial region with much of its wealth deriving from the textile production, especially cotton and coal mining.  Manufacturing still makes an important contribution to the economy, but the areas of specialisation now include Defence, nuclear power, vehicles and food products.  The seaside resort of Blackpool has been a popular destination for days out and weekends away since the days of the Industrial Revolution when the mills were at their peak production.  The mill workers would visit during their “wakes” week in the summer and Blackpool Tower, the illuminations and the ballroom still draw large numbers of visitors.  Lancashire is famous for its hearty cuisine with such delicacies as Lancashire Hotpot, Eccles cakes, Parkin and the town of Mossley near to Oldham claims to have been the birthplace of the first fish and chips shop in northern England.
