Process Safety Engineer
Process Safety Engineers develop and implement safety systems that reduce the risk of hazardous incidents in pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing. They ensure that operations involving flammable, reactive, or toxic materials are designed and maintained with risk mitigation at the forefront.
Key tasks include:
Conducting hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) – Identifying process risks and recommending mitigation strategies.
Designing safety systems and controls – Including pressure relief devices, containment measures, and emergency shutdown protocols.
Performing risk assessments – Such as SIL (Safety Integrity Level) analysis, LOPA (Layers of Protection Analysis), and DSEAR/ATEX compliance reviews.
Supporting process design – Working with engineers and chemists to incorporate safety into new equipment or scale-up plans.
Investigating incidents and near misses – Leading root cause analysis and implementing corrective/preventative actions (CAPAs).
A strong background in chemical engineering and regulatory frameworks (HSE, OSHA, COMAH) is essential for this role.
