Key tasks include:

  • Conducting hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) – Identifying process risks and recommending mitigation strategies.

  • Designing safety systems and controls – Including pressure relief devices, containment measures, and emergency shutdown protocols.

  • Performing risk assessments – Such as SIL (Safety Integrity Level) analysis, LOPA (Layers of Protection Analysis), and DSEAR/ATEX compliance reviews.

  • Supporting process design – Working with engineers and chemists to incorporate safety into new equipment or scale-up plans.

  • Investigating incidents and near misses – Leading root cause analysis and implementing corrective/preventative actions (CAPAs).

A strong background in chemical engineering and regulatory frameworks (HSE, OSHA, COMAH) is essential for this role.
