Job Summary:
This is a unique opportunity offering initial and longer-term career development working on exciting cutting edge technologies.  For an ambitious company who are pioneers in the use of synthetic biology and its application to transform the discovery, development and manufacture of biologics, cell & gene therapies.  Based in state-of-the-art laboratories near Oxford they are at the cutting edge of research in this field, which has huge potential to deliver solutions for the production of complex, high value products.  They need to recruit 2 Associate Scientists to join their newly formed Gene Editing team as this expands due to an increased volume of programmes, particularly the US.

The Company
The company are at the cutting edge of the exciting field of synthetic biology after developing their unique platform which enables them to offer solutions to the discovery, development and manufacture of biologics, cell & gene therapies.  They currently offer a range of custom and platform services, specialising in DNA design, optimisation of protein and viral expression systems, and cell line development technologies.  They are going through a significant period of expansion based on the success of their services and technology, not just in the UK but also in the US where they have recently opened a new office.

A strong focus is placed on R&D activities and further developing platform technologies, as supported by the recent receipt of multiple grants awards from Innovate UK.

The Opportunity:

As an Associate Scientist you will be involved in a number of internal platform and external development programmes focusing on expanding the company’s Gene Editing capabilities and platforms.  This is a dynamic role where your attention will be divided between driving laboratory research forward using an innovative approach, project management and client communication.

The focus of this role is to develop their gene editing platform technologies which they are currently commercialising after receiving multiple grants and funding for.  As well as delivering external editing programmes to develop cell lines for the generation of therapeutic proteins and the development of viral vectors.  They use a range of techniques such as CRISPR as well as others in the editing of genes to engineer cell lines for use in bio production systems.

This company has fantastic growth potential meaning there will be opportunities to further your career, and to contribute significantly in bringing new products and services to the market.

Desired Skills and Experience:

They are looking for a creative thinking scientist who has a BSc and commercial experience / or an MSc with laboratory experience gained during your education or preferably within industry.  You will need to have experience of mammalian cell culture techniques for both adherent and suspended cell lines, in particular cancer cell lines.  With strong molecular biology skills including PCR, RT – PCR, as well as experience in the development of cell biology assays.   Additionally you will need experience of CRISPR or other gene editing techniques.  If you have experience of the generation of viral vectors including lentivirus, retrovirus then this is advantageous to your application.

You will need to have an engineering mindset with the ability to use statistical approaches with experience of using small scale bioreactor systems.
