Job Summary:
James Hume is recruiting for a Cell Engineering Scientist with a background in Molecular Biology to join one of the UK’s leading synthetic biology companies to be part of their team and based near Oxford.  The company pride themselves on the range of services they provide to support the discovery, development, and production of biologics, cell and gene therapies.  The Engineering Scientist will be developing gene editing technologies and platforms for both internal and external clients.

The Company
The company are a leader in the field of Synthetic Biology with a platform technology based on a modular DNA expression system enabling them to specialise in the design of DNA, optimisation of protein expression systems, develop viral delivery systems and cell line development technologies.  This enables them to support the discovery, development, and production of biologics, cell and gene therapies for their clients.  In additions to the external projects they have a number of ongoing programmes in this area to further enhance their current technologies and develop new concepts.     

The Opportunity:
This is an exciting and diverse opportunity where as an Engineering Scientist you will be working to develop their existing platform technology further as well as on external commercial projects.  Working from the bench on assigned projects you will be using your science and creative thinking to drive these forward so that results are delivered on time.  You will be leading projects from the set-up phase till close out, leading these internally by working with colleagues, from senior to junior, in the laboratory to develop the science needed to create the cell lines and expression systems.   

This is a senior role in the department meaning you will be in contact with clients on a regular basis as a technical expert, providing project updates and presentations when required.  Additionally, you will provide training to more junior staff to help with their development as well as technical issues they face.  This is an excellent role where your innovative approach as a scientist will be an asset and give you the chance to gain valuable skills to progress your career with them.

Desired Skills and Experience:
For this opportunity you will need to be educated to PhD level in a relevant life science with experience of mammalian cell culture as a minimum with the ability to generate adherent, suspended, and stable cell lines.  Additionally you will need to have experience of using CRISPR or other gene editing tools with cell engineering and / or screening methods.  If you have experience of generating viral vectors such as lentiviral, retroviral and AAV.  If you have experience of cell sorting and flow cytometry then this is advantageous to your application.
