Summary
A brand new opportunity has arisen in Borehamwood, Herts, for a Chemistry or Engineering graduate with some commercial experience, preferably gained in an R&D laboratory. This is a hands-on role in which you will work on a range of projects involving miniature to bench-scale chemical reactors, including supervision, testing and on-site assembly (potentially anywhere in the world). If you are an ambitious individual looking to develop your scientific career, this will be an excellent way to do so.

The Company
An established, well-respected organisation, involved in the custom supply of services to major global chemical and petrochemical corporations, to develop new chemicals, plstics and medicines. Based in Borehamwood, Herts, the company do not carry out process research themselves, but rather provide their clients with bench and pilot scale automated reactor and calorimeters, for such work. Their systems typically consist of a stirred reactor with all the necessary probes and liquid/gas dosing capability to enable a wide range of processes to be investigated. Their equipment consists of electronics for measuring things such as temperature, pressure and pH plus stirred glass and metal chambers that are heated/cooled for performing the experiments.

Operating internationally, they are a company that specialises in the research and development of chemical reactors and systems. They provide both automated and manual tools for process R&D to clients in the pharmaceutical, fine chemical and petrochemical industries, as well as in academia. Originally established in 1987, the company has grown to include a complete team of chemists and chemical engineers, working from a fully equipped testing facility, backed with powerful and chemist-friendly software.

The Role
This is a varied and scientifically engaging role for a Chemistry / Chemical Engineering graduate who is looking to develop an industrial and commercial career. Working to very strict processes and regulations, you will undertake a range of duties in chemistry laboratories and pilot plants, to assemble and test research scale reactors and related equipment for automated process development, before it is shipped to clients worldwide.

You will be involved in the development, assembly and supply of versatile specialised computer controlled systems for chemical reactors. These involve the control of temperature, pressure, feed rate, pH etc – basically anything research scale for the total automation of a chemical reaction.

You will be required to work on a range of projects involving miniature to bench-scale chemical reactors, including supervision, testing and on site assembly (worldwide). You will need to liaise with clients, sales engineers and software/electronics specialists in order to get the system built, then personally undertake chemical and performance testing, first at the laboratory in Borehamwood and then after installation at the client’s site (once you are more experienced). Extensive training will be provided.

Benefits
In addition to a generous salary (£20k - £25k depending on experience), the company offers an annual bonus, 22 days’ holiday (plus bank holidays) and an excellent pension (after 1 year’s service).

Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will be a Chemistry / Chemical Engineering graduate, with some previous experience in a commercial / industrial environment or research laboratory. You must be able to demonstrate a genuine passion for scientific development, as well as strong client-facing skills. You will need to be well organised, confident and a good communicator, willing to travel on occasions and capable of handling multiple tasks at the same time. Many projects have tight deadlines, so all staff are required to show flexibility adapting to the needs of the job. Confidence in working with advanced software packages is essential.
