 Overview:

James Hume is currently recruiting for a Lead Scientist to join a centre of excellence that is leading the way in the development of cell & gene therapies. Based in Central London, you will provide technical leadership to the process development, analytical and manufacturing laboratories for cutting edge autologous cell therapies, from concept through till conclusion. This is an exciting, challenging role where you will be providing expertise to ensure the successful commercialisation of cutting edge therapies

The Company:

A centre of excellence that is at the forefront of creating a viable and sustainable cell and gene therapy industry in the UK. With headquarters in Central London, they have built a market-leading multidisciplinary team that has the ability to take a therapy from concept through the development cycle to the market.  They collaborate with both academia and industry and are able to provide the scientific, clinical and commercial expertise needed to overcome the challenges that hinder the commercialisation of these fast developing, cutting edge technologies.  The company’s longer term aim is to make the UK a global leader in the development and commercial exploitation of therapies.  They are making great strides towards this aim, with therapies entering phase 2 clinical trials and building credible cases to be progressed to stage 3.  Added to this they are expanding their manufacturing and development operations to meet increased demand for their services from the academic and commercial sectors.

The Opportunity:

The Lead Scientist role is a key position in the newly formed Industrialisation group that reflects the increasing volume of development programmes but also their advancement through the commercialisation process.  The successful applicant will be responsible for the day to day management of development programmes with involvement & influence in the planning and execution of the programmes.  To achieve this you will be leading a team of scientists working in collaboration with academic and commercial partners to deliver the developmental programmes.

As the Lead Scientist you will develop strategies for the industrialization group so that the company’s aims and goals are delivered, working with senior management for the group in this process using your technical expertise and scientific knowledge to deliver programmes.  In addition you will work closely with academic and commercial partners to ensure all potential development programmes are scouted successfully and support these fast developing and exciting sectors by identifying the next generation of therapies for commercialisation.

This is an influential role where you will have an impact not only on the continued development of the sector but also the cell and gene therapy sector.

Desired Skills and Competencies:

You will need to have demonstrable experience of working in the Cell & Gene Therapies or related industry with knowledge of the commercial landscape and the strategic impact that process and analytical development programmes have.  With the ability to apply your technical expertise to overcome issues faced and solve problems during the industrialisation process.  You will also need to have experience of managing teams of scientists and knowledge of GMP.  Ideally you will be PhD educated in a relevant life science, however a lower level qualification with commercial experience would also be relevant.

Technically you will need to have experience of molecular and protein based analytical techniques, such as flow cytometry, high content imaging, PCR, cytotoxicity, assays, and cell based assays.   Experience of cell culture expansion methodologies across a range of human cell types plus experience of downstream methodologies including purification, formulation and finish also being advantageous to your application.
