A pioneering company who are at the centre of the Cell & Gene Therapy sector are seeking a Lead Scientist to take on an influential position within their Process R&D Group based in 1200 m2 laboratories in Central London.   Where they focus on closed, automated bioprocessing platforms with the purpose to support GMP manufacture in the sector. 

As a company they have developed an end-to-end suspension based manufacturing process for AAV as well as a PSC expansion platform and using this to support the rapid ATMP growth in the UK which they are now using to support the growth of the Cell & Gene Therapy Sector.  The role of the Lead Scientist is to provide leadership and in-depth expertise in the process, analytical and manufacturing development of ATMP’s.  With an emphasis on bioprocessing.  This is a unique opportunity where you will be joining a world leading team with substantial resource at the interface between academia and industry. 

The lead Scientist will take full responsibility for the day to day management, planning and execution of experimental programmes that focus on scalable, closed and automated bioprocessing systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Use your extensive technical knowledge of ATMP and / or Biologics manufacturing processes to develop strategies with senior figures in the company and then execute this.
  • Work closely with all relevant internal and external stakeholders to ensure programmes are scoped successfully to support the UK Cell & Gene Therapy Industry.
  • Deliver process development projects though technical oversight, reviewing experimental design & execution with other SME’s.
  • Keep up to date with latest technical development ins the sector and apply this to he Technology and Process Innovation team’s R&D program and project strategy.
Required Skills and Expertise:

  • Proven experience in mammalian cell scalable Bioprocessing & experience as essential.
  • Knowledge of mammalian cell bioprocessing to deliver robust and industrial GMP ready processes.
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques such as flow cytometry, PCR, cell based functional assays to be applied as characterisation, in process and release controls.
  • Understanding of CMC requirements for manufacture is beneficial.
  • Experience of pluripotent stem cell or viral vector bioprocessing is desirable.
  • Knowledge of chromatography, filtration and other purification techniques is desirable.
  • Experience of Tech Transfer is also desireable.
  • PhD or MSc in a relevant life science with experience of working in the Cell & Gene therapy field.
